Unicorn Party 4 yrs My daughter loves unicorns and asked for a unicorn-themed party for her 4th birthday. We invited all the girls in the preschool class and a few neighborhood friends there were 10 girls in all, all 4 to 5 years old.
I created the invitations on my computer with a picture of a white unicorn with purple hair and a dark pink border. The top of the invitation read Dreams really do come true, Kaia wants to share her birthday with you! Next to the unicorn was Please join us in celebrating Kaia's 4th birthday, Saturday October 21st, 12-2 p.m at our house. Please RSVP to xxx-xxxx. I used a fancy font (Papyrus) in dark pink and made address labels with a color picture of Rarity (Unicorn My Little Pony) next to my daughter's name and address. We mailed the invitations in pink and purple envelopes (on clearance at Target) and my daughter decorated the back of these with her garden-themed foam stickers. The invitations turned out very cute and were simple to make. I received several compliments on them. I purchased fairytale unicorn plates, cups, and napkins from CelebrateExpress.com, as well as a unicorn birthday banner and huge unicorn mylar balloon.
The party was held in our formal living/dining room (new house, with no furniture in the room yet). A long preschool table was set up in the center of the living room with a pink plastic tablecloth. I decorated the center of the table with star garland spiraled down the length of the table and taped in place. I placed spiral lollipops (unicorn horns) in 2 mini flower pots filled with craft foam as centerpieces. I also glued cotton balls around the edge of each flower pot. At each place setting, we placed a pink unicorn goodie bag (CelebrateExpress.com) filled with unicorn tattoos and 2 sheets of unicorn stickers (purchased at OrientalTrading.com) I also set up an adult table with a simple white tablecloth and the same star garland draped down the center (most of the moms stayed for the duration of the party).
The room was decorated with pink, purple, and white streamers twisted and draped from corner to corner. I also taped 2 balloons in each corner in alternating colors of pink, purple, and white. From mylittlepony.com, I printed off birthday themed coloring pages of ponies (some unicorn) opening presents, blowing our candles, etc. My daughter and I colored these and I taped them onto pink and purple construction paper. These were taped around the room at the girls eye level, along with the unicorn birthday banner. I also had 2 balloon bouquets in the room. One was the unicorn mylar and pink, purple, and white balloons. The other was the same, except with a generic happy birthday mylar.
As each girl arrived, they were given a pony headband and tail that I had made prior to the party. I found the idea on FamilyFun.com. I cut pony ears out of white felt and taped pink felt inside the inner ear. I then cut equal strands of pink, purple, and white yarn for bangs and tied them onto inexpensive headbands. The pony tail was the same colors of yarn cut long and tied to a single strand of yarn that the girls could tie around their waist. There are detailed directions and photos for this project at FamilyFun.com (look under Pony Party). The ears and tails turned out adorable and were not very time consuming. The girls loved them and enjoyed prancing around and watching their tails bob.
The party started off with lunch. The menu for the girls was heart-shaped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, bugles (unicorn horns), baby carrots (a unicorn favorite) with dip, and a rainbow fruit tray (this idea was from mylittlepony.com). For the rainbow tray, I had a bowl of fruit dip and fanned out in the shape of a rainbow blueberries, strawberries, green grapes, orange slices, and banana slices. I also offered chili and homemade bread for the adults. Drinks included water, apple cider, and pink lemonade. When the girls were done eating, they made magic glitter dough. I bought a package of party-size playdough (Target) and put them in mini clear containers that I found at the dollar store. Each girl picked one out and then added very fine glitter (pink and gold). They also decorated their containers with garden-themed foam stickers (some girls also used some of their unicorn stickers from the goodie bags). Next we played pin the horn on the unicorn (CelebrateExpress.com). Each girl received a prize a unicorn rubber ducky (OrientalTrading.com).
We then had my daughter's birthday cake, which I ordered from a local bakery. It was a 9x13 size with white frosting and a large unicorn in the center and a rainbow in the background, dark pink trim and the wording Happy 4th Birthday Kaia. I also served ice cream with the cake. My daughter then opened presents and the girls ended up opening and playing with some of her presents. The party ended with the girls sitting in a circle. They passed a bowl filled with goodies (wrapped in pink and purple tissue paper) while one of my daughter's CD's played. When the music stopped, whoever was holding the bowl got to pick a prize. The prizes included My Little Pony bracelets and dollar store necklaces and rings.
The girls really enjoyed this game and there were enough trinkets that everyone ended up with 3-4 goodies. The party turned out great and my daughter had a wonderful time! As always, I found BirthdayPartyIdeas.com to be extremely helpful (I checked out the unicorn and pony party sections)! I also found some great ideas/printables on FamilyFun.com and MyLittlePony.com.
